COLVA FAMA CELEBRATED IN KUWAIT
In living up to the traditional Colva Fama festivities that are celebrated with
grandeur and gaiety in the beautiful village of Colva in Goa, the apex body of
Colvenkars in Kuwait, The Colva United Centre (CUC) marked the millennium Fama
celebration in Kuwait, on Sunday, 15th October, 2000, with a glittering function
at Hotel Mumtaz Mahal in Kuwait City. The venue was beautifully decorated in the
Goan style and reflected the typical Goan splendor. The celebration coincided
with the Colva Fama celebrated in Goa on 16th October, 2000. The ceremonial
opening started with the traditional devotional hymn, "MENINO JESUS AMCHO"
in honor of Infant Jesus. The highlight of the celebration was the cutting of
the Fama Cake by Mr. Pedro Jose Fernandes. Addressing the guests who thronged
the venue, the President of CUC Mr. Aleluia Fernandes extended a hearty and
cordial welcome for the traditional Fama celebrations and briefly outlined the
background and the importance of Fama celebration and hoped to continue the Fama
festivities in Kuwait too, in the years to come, so that all Colvenkars in
Kuwait could rejoice and cherish the memories of the grand event held every year
in Goa.
The celebration included games for adults and children, boogie-woogie, tambola, etc. interspersed with prizes and surprises. CUC also seized the opportunity of the Fama celebration to bid adieus to one of their member and staunch supporter, Mr. Pedro Jose Fernandes who is leaving after a quarter century in Kuwait. As a token of love from the Club, he was presented a beautiful memento by the President. Mr. Pedro Jose was totally taken by surprise at the kind and unexpected gesture on the part of CUC and expressed thanks and gratitude to the Managing Committee and to all the members. Pedro Jose also rendered a famous Konkani song in his mellifluous voice in praise of the Fama which was joined and applauded by the whole crowd.
Hudson Fdes controlled the airwaves with flair and charm and DJ Vincy Fdes was at his best churning out the golden oldies as well as the latest numbers. General Secretarty Mr. Rui Afonso proposed a vote of thanks. He thanked all the members, guests, well wishers, sponsors, etc. for their generous contribution to make the event a great success. In a very special way, he thanked the Goa-World Team and wished them every success to serve the Goan community throughout the world.
The
sumptuous buffet included the mouth-watering Goan delicacies "sorpotel and
sannas" specially prepared by lady members of the Club. The Colva Fama 2000
was a grand success and the organizers really deserve to be congratulated for
putting up such an extraordinary function to commemorate the Fama celebrations
in Goa.
